NOTHING IS CLEAR
Inaugural Exhibition of axis_
axis_ presents Nothing is Clear, the inaugural exhibition of the gallery, curated by Elyse Tonna. Bringing together works by Mario Abela and Justin Falzon, Laura Besançon, Aaron Bezzina, Rebecca Bonaci, Kane Calì, Nico Conti, Ryan Falzon, Romeo Roxman Gatt, Sarah Maria Scicluna and Seb Tanti Burlò, the exhibition reflects on the conditions shaping contemporary life across multiple, overlapping scales.

Nothing is Clear begins from the understanding that the present is not experienced as a stable or unified reality. It is shaped through the interplay of political, social, cultural, technological and emotional forces that influence one another. From geopolitical conflict and ecological crisis to shifting social realities and personal relations, these conditions do not unfold independently, but remain interconnected and interdependent. The exhibition does not seek to simplify or resolve these complexities. Instead, it creates a space in which they can be engaged with critically.
Clarity is often framed as a form of access, a way of seeing, knowing or moving forward. Yet it is produced through systems that simultaneously organise and restrict it. Structures that claim precision, including tools, infrastructures, images and symbols, operate through processes of selection and distinction. What appears clear is therefore already conditioned. The exhibition examines how meaning is constructed within these frameworks, and how it is continuously negotiated, disrupted and re-formed.

Across the exhibition, works move through conditions of instability and transformation. Objects associated with use appear suspended between function and form. Materials such as stone, metal, porcelain and copper register processes of accumulation, corrosion and change, carrying traces of time and memory. Image-making shifts between recognition and abstraction, drawing from digital culture, media and collective memory. Relations, whether social, political or personal, are presented not as fixed structures, but as ongoing processes shaped through tension, negotiation and exchange.
The inclusion of works produced across different moments highlights the persistence of these conditions. While contexts may appear to shift, underlying structures continue to operate. In this sense, the exhibition brings past and present into dialogue, emphasising continuity rather than progression.
Situated within a historic building – The Butler’s House, axis_ acknowledges the layered histories embedded within its architecture. Originally tied to colonial structures, the space is recontextualised as a site for critical engagement. Located at the centre of the island, it operates as a point of intersection, reflecting Malta’s position within the Mediterranean as a space shaped by movement, exchange and ongoing transformation.
As the inaugural exhibition, Nothing is Clear establishes axis_ as a platform for dialogue, collaboration and critical reflection. The gallery positions itself as an evolving framework that brings together diverse practices and perspectives, engaging with the conditions that define contemporary life. Rather than offering conclusions, the exhibition opens up questions around position, responsibility and participation.
Nothing is Clear invites visitors to consider not only what is visible, but how it is structured, and to reflect on their own position within these conditions.

The exhibition is hosted by axis_ and is a satellite event of the Malta Biennale 2026. The exhibition launches on the 10th of April and is open until the 29th May 2026. More information on www.axis.mt.
