Just For Today
Kim Sammut's year-long multidisciplinary exploration of grief, memory, absence, and love
Just for Today closes this month with its third and final exhibition, bringing artist Kim Sammut’s year-long multidisciplinary exploration of grief, memory, absence, and love to an end.
The project began, as it will end, with a journal. Kim Sammut lost her aunt Lorna to cancer on the 22nd of September 2023. “I consider this woman to be as much of a mother to me as my biological mother,” Kim shares, “only she formed my soul instead of my body.” In the months that followed, Kim found herself returning again and again to the prayers and reflections Lorna had written by hand in her final years. One line, written by Lorna to herself, urging herself to stop hiding and live, just for today, loving herself, became the project’s title and its ongoing address. Everything that has followed across the past year -the photography, painting, film, sound, installation, and ritual – has been, in its own way, an attempt to answer her.
Curated by Sarah Chircop, the project unfolded across three exhibitions, two workshops, performance, and a closing ritual-prayer event. Allowing themes, materials, and forms to emerge organically alongside Kim’s own ongoing experience of grief, the project lent itself to an exploration of the experiential rather than resolving towards a fixed conclusion.
The first two exhibitions focused on loss and absence; the fragmentation of memory, and the experience of watching someone deeply loved decline slowly. The first, opening in March at Rosa Kwir, drew visitors inward through a spiral structure developed with Marcio Vella, arriving at an intimate encounter with Lorna at its centre and closing with a spoken-word and sound performance by fatima a.m. and Tina Camilleri inspired by their time with members of the Hospice team. The second, in June, turned further inward still, exploring absence not as emptiness but as something with texture, pressure and weight, its spiral opening into a wave-like form as Kim’s process shifted towards repetition, retreat, and searching.
Alongside the exhibitions, two intergenerational workshops, Touching Grief and Touching Life, led by Ruth Borg and Sara Amin Omran and coordinated by fatima a.m., invited participants to explore grief and aliveness through embodiment, movement, and collective reflection. Throughout the project’s year-long development, Gloria Spiteri, a social worker from Hospice Malta, supported Kim and the wider team in an advisory and after-care capacity, ensuring the work remained grounded in care at every stage.
This third and final exhibition opening on the 9th of September turns towards what remains after loss; love. Not as an answer to grief, but as its ongoing practice. Where the previous chapters reached towards absence and return, this one reaches outward again, towards touch, tenderness, and the risk of loving without certainty. Developed once more with Marcio Vella and accompanied by a final sound collaboration with Tina Camilleri, the exhibition invites visitors to leave a trace of their own, a prayer, in the spirit of Lorna’s own words.
The exhibition will close with a ritual event on the 22nd of September, exactly three years since Lorna’s passing. Guests will gather in Manikata for a short sunset walk, one of Lorna’s favourites, before arriving together at The Veg Box, where a performance by Kim Sammut and Tina Camilleri will trace Lorna’s prayers alongside others gathered throughout the final exhibition. A communal invitation toward togetherness – to reflect, remember, and love- it brings Just For Today’s year-long journey to a close.
